Roman Reigns vs. John Cena is the Wrong Match for WrestleMania 32

Recent buzz online is that WWE world heavyweight champion Roman Reigns will likely defend his title against John Cena at WrestleMania 32 on April 3. For those of you struggling to grasp the complexities of that statement, rest assured I understand.

Because if you don't believe this scenario is complex, then you are all kinds of crazy.

The truth is this match has no business happening, at least not this soon. Some might say it shouldn't happen at all. Of course that all depends on which side you're on.

For Cena's fans, this would be just another night. The top guys gets the top matches and he's not worn the championship in 17 months so he's due. He would win number 16, tying Ric Flair's record and would probably celebrate to the jeers of fans on the following Monday Night Raw.

For Roman's fans, the very idea of this is enough to induce uncontrollable vomiting.

Reigns is finally over. After nearly a full year of working hard and enduring the wrath of fans that wanted nothing to do with him as world champ, Roman is finally to the point that he can comfortably wear the title and enjoy a sizable amount of support.

All it took was beating down the chairman and his son-in-law on live TV. Who would've thought?

But for anyone paying attention over the past year, this is what WWE was obviously working toward. Love him or hate him, Reigns is the guy the company wanted to elevate to the next level. He is the one that was apparently due to receive the torch and carry WWE to the future.

So now that he's finally in that spot, why not make it official?

Why not work him against Cena and put him over? John's willing to do business, he's done it before. Why not advance the company to its next phase by Roman defeating Cena at Mania? It's the logical next step right?

But the flipside of that argument involves Roman falling flat on his face the very moment it happens. Yes he's likely the next top guy and yes it's obvious to anyone with half a brain that WWE wants him in that role. However, he just moved into that spot and he's had virtually no time to even get his feet under him yet.

He's in better shape than before, it's true. But why would WWE push its luck here? Why take the chance? Reigns could get over on Cena in terms of popularity but even though fans recognize where all of this is going, it's too soon to just suddenly annoit a new king.

Fans don't want Roman shoved down their throats, it's as simple as that. When that process began in late 2014, it looked as though he would never recover from it. But the night he took out Triple H was the night that fans began to come around. They sensed his frustration, they saw the mean streak that never comes out as often as it should.

They saw a guy working hard to make his case for top guy and they finally began to understand.

The past 11 months was not about Reigns being artificially created to play a part, it was about him finding a way to organically connect to the crowds. Once he managed to do that, everything changed. Now he's seen as what he's been all along; a hard worker that just wanted a chance to prove he could carry the banner.

So far he's doing a pretty good job of it.

But to push him to Cena levels is asking too much, at least right now. Roman deserves the chance to keep evolving, to keep doing what he's doing and getting better while he does it. He's done so many things right and being forced to compete with the star power that John has is not something he will be good at.

He will be eventually. He has to be. If he can't then all of this is for nothing. Right now though he should be left alone and allowed to keep impressing every time he steps through the ropes. Roman is the next top star and the match to pass the torch should happen but WrestleMania 32 is not the night for it.

Cena's not ready to go and WWE is not ready for him to go. Reigns should not be forced into losing the ground he's gained to this point and it's beyond crazy to intentionally book it so it happens. Roman is right where he should be and it should stay that way.
