What if Roman Reigns is Not WWE's Next Top Guy?

Roman Reigns is once again on the outside looking in on WWE's World Heavyweight Championship. The guy that so many fans have believed is the heir apparent to John Cena has been without the belt since the Royal Rumble and now must fight at Fastlane just for the chance to win it back.

It's a journey, right? What we've been seeing with Roman over the past year is just the typical journey wrought with the usual trials and tribulations of a rising top guy in Vince McMahon's company. All of this work is being done just to build Roman's character and develop his backstory en route to his ascension atop WWE's main event mountain.

Right?

But in a business full of swerves, here's one that not many are even considering. What if this whole thing is a swerve and Roman Reigns is in fact not WWE's next top guy? Has that even occurred to anyone?

Or have we all been so programmed to believe Roman is the chosen one for so long that we can't even comprehend anything else? Fans believe themselves to be smart, they believe that not even veteran promoters like Vince can actually work them; is that what's happening here?

Has the decision to move forward with a new guy even truly been made at this point? We all assumed so; it's obvious WWE holds Roman in very high regard and loves to put him on TV. But does that really men he's been singled out to rule over the company?

Someone has to, of course. WWE may call itself sports entertainment but the company follows all the guidelines of a pro wrestling promotion and one of the most important guidelines is that one guy is the top guy.

One guy is the top draw, he's the face of the company and represents the product more than anyone else on the roster. He's depended upon to carry the load, to be the goodwill ambassador for the company to outside world and he's expected to work harder than the rest.

There can be other talents around him, others that can work on his level either with or against him but at the end of the day, he's the top guy. This is how WWE does business.

That guy for over 10 years has been Cena. He's not always going to be, of course as he's only getting older and eventually he will start slowing down. WWE must start planning for the future and Roman seemed like a pretty good choice in the beginning.

But not so much now. At this point, his real value to WWE must be questioned. How exactly can he become the top star, the most bankable star, meant to sell a ton of merchandise and bring fans back week after week, when a good number of them can't stand the sight of him?

This is much more than just WWE refusing to turn Cena despite the fact he's hated. This is the supposed future top star not being able to get over for longer than 10 minutes at a time. WWE has done everything it can for this guy and it's still not working. Then again, they've also done everything they can to hurt him as well.

It's almost as if the storylines were written and Roman was just inserted as the main player. Then when things didn't go well, the storylines continued to flow as if everything was going perfectly. Adjustments weren't made, Brock Lesnar was still brought in and killed Roman's momentum, he still lost the belt and now fans are sick of the whole process.

WWE's top guy is a babyface and Roman isn't. Technically WWE doesn't even have one right now, at least not until Cena comes back. It's obvious Roman is not going to get there and yet WWE still keeps pursuing this as if the ship will suddenly right itself and he will emerge like Jesus walking on water.

The fact is Roman's what they have and neither WWE Creative or the McMahons want anyone else. But what do they want him for?

The time has come for reality to set in. Roman wants it, he works hard to get it but it's just not happening. None of this has happened organically like it did with Stone Cold, The Rock, CM Punk or Daniel Bryan and until that can happen, it just will not be right for WWE or for fans.

Maybe the company has already come to this conclusion. Maybe it's already given up on him. Stubborness can only explain it away for so long; the fact is Roman is just not the answer to the top guy question and WWE surely sees that by now.

If not then get used to more of the same. Please let it be a swerve.
