Sheamus Heels All Wounds

News flash; you're supposed to hate heels. And by hate I mean hate. I mean, really hate. You're supposed to hate heels so much that every time you see them, you want to go full-on Elvis and shoot the TV.

Heels should bring out the worst in you; make you uncomfortable, frustrate you, annoy you, force you to want hit the person next to you. Heels should make you hate like you've never hated before and every time you see them, you need to feel it more than you did the last time you saw them.

But you don't. In fact, you're probably okay with heels. You may even like them. And why is that?

Because you're so smart. You know that pro wrestling is a work and that these guys are only playing characters on your TV. So when you see Bad News Barrett, you cheer. When Bray Wyatt enters the ring, you're on the edge of your seat. And every time Paul Heyman cuts a promo, you sit back and marvel at WWE's ignorance for not using him in a creative capacity.

You know the truth, you've seen how the trick works. Aren't you the smartest.

But now there's a heel in WWE that you don't like. You won't appreciate his work in the ring and you won't respect him on the mic. You will hate this guy with every fiber of your being and every time you see him, you will be reaching for a loaded firearm.

His name is Sheamus and you've hated him all along.

The moment this guy got over as a babyface, fans turned on him. He was one of the more popular protagonists in WWE as kids and adults alike consistently popped for him. Sheamus got hot and the company capitalized on it by putting him on the top tier. He was dependable, he was a solid worker and he was tough as nails.

But none of that mattered to anyone because he got goofy. And once you get goofy, fans get lost.

Sheamus fell into the John Cena trap, the one baited with the immense desire to have fun and appeal to the crowd's sense of humor. It's not a trap for everyone of course. Chris Jericho and Shawn Michaels used humor to get over all the time. But they did it with style and were very good at it.

Sheamus was not so good at it and instead of coming off as clever and witty, he was more like an Irish Ronald McDonald. And apparently, Irish Ronald McDonald doesn't get many laughs. So when he was finally ready to come back to the fold, Sheamus did so as a heel. Now fans can boo as they did before but it will make perfect sense this time.

In fact, The Celtic Warrior could very well become the top heel in WWE. That may sound like a bit of a stretch right now but the facts are there.

Seth Rollins is a smarmy and cocky heel, strapped with an overblown sense of entitlement and narcissistic tendencies. It's because of this that he's one of the more entertaining characters in the company and thanks to his recent WWE world title win, his popularity as a heel is at an all time high.

Brock Lensar was the biggest monster heel in WWE history until he went after Rollins. As soon as he did that, he renewed his babyface card and was likely on his way to out-popping every other protagonist in the WWE locker room. But then he left again, effectively putting an end to his turn and cooling him off to the point of shoving him in a glacier like Captain America.

Bray Wyatt is too popular to be a true top heel and fans don't care enough about The Miz, Big Show or Kane to buy into any of them as the number one baddie. So the door is wide open for Sheamus to Brogue kick everyone square in the mouth on his way to hateville.

And the best part about it? There is nothing redeeming about Sheamus right now. Thanks to his slide during his last run, there is no reason for fans to appreciate him at all. But they will care about him because they hate him. WWE will see that if they don't now and Sheamus will benefit from having been in the right place at the right time.

Pro wrestling companies thrive on the strength of its top heels. The more hated, the more relevant the heel is, the more popular and the more over the babyface is. If there are no solid, old-fashioned heels capable of drawing heat and making fans despise them, then the faces will suffer as a result. There is no drama in seeing a fan favorite get back at a heel that fans don't care about or are indifferent to.

This is not Sheamus. The guy is hated and will play his role to the fullest.

But give it enough time and eventually he will get popular again. And when he does, you will love him again like you did the first time he turned face. You'll love him because you're so smart and you insist on cheering for heels to prove you're smart in the first place.

News flash; the guys in the ring aren't the only ones with roles to play. Hate the heels. It's what you're supposed to do.
