Sting vs Triple H Set For WrestleMania 31

WWE finally made it offcial on Sunday, February 22 when it announced that Triple H would be facing Sting at WrestleMania 31 on March 29. The announcement came during the Fastlane event, mere moments after Sting and Hunter's confrontation in the middle of the ring.

It was probably the worst kept secret of this year's grand spectacle and apart from Roman Reigns getting a shot at Brock Lesnar, no other match seemed as likely to happen. After all, the former NWA and WCW champion had stirred the proverbial hornets' nest back at Survivor Series in 2014 when he gave Team Cena the assist in winning the main event.

It was the first shot fired in this feud and since then, it was apparent where this was going to end up.

But that doesn't mean that everyone has been all that happy about it. For many fans, Triple H is not the right opponent for Sting. The Game may be the most high profile antagonist in WWE and one of the biggest legends still capable of going in the ring but the fact is he's not the only legend left.

The truth is that until The Undertaker steps through the ropes against Sting, many fans will not be satisfied. For the first time since they worked in WCW, both men are under contract to the same pro wrestling company and this time, it's not the neon Sting and Mean Mark we're talking about.

This is a case of two legends, two icons in the industry, being in the same locker room on the same night yet not working each other in a headlining match. For some fans, that is an injustice and one that must be corrected as soon as possible.

I for one am not really sure about that one anymore. As crazy as it may sound, the fact is that part of me hopes the match never happens. Imagine the laugh that Sting and Taker could have backstage over the match not going down. It would be the ultimate good hearted rib on fans, the one dream match that never happened and kept the debate raging for years.

And honestly, there was not really enough time to build it up for Mania in the first place. Bray Wyatt only just made his intentions toward Taker known at Fastlane, ending weeks of speculation as to when exactly he would make the challenge. That match will be much easier to work up and present to fans than Sting versus Undertaker would have been.

The issue of who would go over in that bout would have become the number one topic of conversation until it happened. And that would probably have overshadowed the grandeur of the match itself. How do you book one of those guys to lose on that stage?

Instead, we're looking at Sting versus Triple H. And fans can complain about this one as much as they want but the truth is that it will deliver on every level at WrestleMania. Hunter is a pro and knows how to do business in the ring. Despite what anyone says about him, The Game will do right by Sting and will give The Icon plenty of chances to shine.

And despite Sting's age, he does appear to be ready. He's waited his whole career for this moment and now that he has it, he will likely take full advantage of it. This is one of those rare times when a main event match will live up to the hype; Sting versus Triple H will be one for the ages.

This time WWE got it right. And when the match is over on March 29 and fans are standing applauding the efforts of both men, it will be obvious that it was the best match for Sting on the best night for him in his career at that moment. And with any luck, that will satisfy everyone.
